Figure 12. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) maps for the Chinatown (CA-MNO-116N) survey grid, with dense, buried deposits indicated by dark gray areas: A. Slice No. 3. B. Slice No. 5. C. Possible buried deposits, suggested by GPR data (light gray polygons = alignments, dark gray polygons = midden deposits), are alongside excavation units (gray squares) and datum locations. While there are no standing remains of cabins or wikiup structures in the town’s Native residential area, life in this neighborhood is described in Paiute mill workers’ and residents’ recollections and in the patterning of surface debris across the site. Oral histories of mill residents and their children contributed to the archaeological study of the Paiute neighborhood and determination of its extent (Figure 17). From this large neighborhood the field school team selected a study quadrant to the south of the mill because it included milled wood and structural remains from least one household and because it had potential for multiple households and common areas. Surface distributions of artifacts showed low quantities across the entire area, with concentrations across the middle of the study area, but the distribution lacks linearity such as one might expect to see from clear household areas or neighborhood layout.
